Employee promotion checklist for your frontline team - downloadable template

Did you know a staggering 82% of sales employees would quit their job if there was no career progression? If you’re looking to improve your employee attrition rates then carrying out fair performance reviews and regularly promoting your employees should be at the top of your agenda.

A workplace promotion is great for both the employer and the employee. The employee benefits because they get the recognition and credit they deserve, they get to boast a senior title and their pay packet will see an improvement. However, it’s also great for you because the employee will feel more motivated and committed to their work. They will strive to live up to their newly promoted title which means they will keep working hard to take on extra responsibilities and commitments.

What are other crucial benefits of promoting frontline employees?

Your employee will feel valued, and as a result, their performance will improve

If your sales associates keep tirelessly working away for years with no reward or recognition, their enthusiasm and drive will die out. They’ll start to question why they should take on more responsibilities and stress if they will never be recognised for it. This issue is pretty common in workplaces, with over 65% of employees reporting that they do not feel recognised at work!

A promotion will boost their confidence because it’s a sign that you think they are capable of progressing to the next level in their career. They’ll start to realise that if they put in the hard work and extra effort, they’ll be rewarded which works wonders for overall company performance.

It drives healthy competition amongst your sales team

Most of us are a tiny bit, if not very competitive in the workplace. We go to work because we want to be valued, respected, fulfilled and we want to make a difference. If we notice that another coworker is exceeding expectations in their role and are getting rewarded for their hard work, the chances are that it will motivate us to do a better job.

By promoting an employee, it sends a message to the rest of the team “If you work hard we will reward you for it.” Your staff will be racing to ensure they are the next employee that is promoted within the business.

It motivates your frontline teams to keep learning

Workplace training isn’t just a nice thing to have, it will actually improve your profit margins, by 24% to be exact

The trouble a lot of managers have, is actually getting their employees to find the motivation to learn. If your employees don’t feel that the training will benefit them, they will never place its importance at the top of their agenda.  On the other hand, if they see the training as worthwhile to themselves and the job then they’ll be significantly more motivated to train and learn new skills on a much more regular basis.

Think of it like this. Bob can do his job as a car salesman perfectly well. He hits the targets he needs to do and he cruises through his day with minimal stress. If he takes up extra training he’s going to have to spend more of his day learning about his job. He’ll encounter more stress when trying to learn and acquire new skills and if there is no benefit to him e.g. promotion, monetary reward or recognition why would he disturb what is currently a comfortable routine for him?

By making it known to your employees that if they regularly train and improve their skills they will be considered for a promotion, you give them extra incentive to incorporate learning into their daily routines.

Your business profits will increase

A lot of managers shy away from promotions because they don’t want to part with their cash. But in fact, promoted employees are some of the hardest working members of staff who will usually raise your profits in the long run.

It’s also important to remember that if you don’t recognise an employee for their hard work and talents another employer will. If all your good employees start leaving you for a competitor you can be sure that that company will be making more profits than you by the end of the year.

Lastly, if you’re not promoting your staff there is a high chance that they will leave. High employee turnover rates are disastrous for business revenue. It has even been reported that turnover can cost employers 33% of an employee’s annual salary

Think of a promotion as an investment in your employee and your business.

What’s included in the employee promotion checklist for frontline teams?

50 questions are included which are all split into different categories. These categories were chosen to fully assess how well-rounded the employee is with their performance at work. The categories are as follows;

Performance and engagement

This section of the checklist is used to identify how well the employee is performing their tasks or functions at work and to also assess how engaged they are.

A high performing and engaged employee will show full commitment to their role on a frequent basis and this will be noticed by other colleagues and customers. In this section, we want to know, are they exceeding expectations on a frequent basis and are other members of the team or customers noticing their exceptional efforts whilst at work?

Leadership qualities

If an employee is ready to move up to the next position in their career, it’s crucial that they possess strong leadership qualities. This is because you’ll need to trust and rely on this employee the more senior they become.

They don’t necessarily have to show that they can manage a team but they need to demonstrate that they can use their own initiative when left alone. They should be comfortable and confident in their own decision-making capabilities and should be able to handle high-pressure situations or conflict in a mature way.

Attitude

What good is it to promote a high performing employee at work if their attitude stinks? A well-rounded, high performing team member should be fantastic at their job but they should also be a joy to work with.

They should strive to be positive and solutions-focused rather than constantly acting in a negative manner and pointing out problems with no answers. You want to promote someone who finds their way out of a bad situation and brings others along with them, rather than moaning about the circumstance they are in and doing nothing about it.

This section will ask questions to gauge an employees mood on a frequent basis and how they interact with other members of the team whilst at work.

Skills and expertise

One of the most important reasons to promote an employee is because they are showing an advanced skill set which has made them exceptionally better at their job.

They should be outperforming other colleagues at their level and are therefore ready to move into the next phase of their career. You’ll want to find out if they are doing all the training necessary to learn the skills they need and whether they can confidently share their advanced knowledge with fellow colleagues.

Communication skills

Bad communication skills in the workplace can be disastrous for business operations. If you want to promote an employee you’ll need to be confident that they can consistently communicate well. They should be comfortable expressing ideas and opinions in order to improve processes or procedures and they should be friendly and warm when communicating with their colleagues.

A great communicator should have the ability to listen just as well as they talk. They should take ideas and opinions on board to improve their performance and they should always stay open-minded.

So there you have it, those are all the sections that we cover in our employee promotion checklist. They were structured to ensure you promote someone who shows commitment in all areas of their role, not just the skill they possess with their specific job.

If your staff member scores at least 70% on the checklist it’s a clear indicator that they are ready for a promotion. So what are you waiting for, download the free template below and start promoting those well-deserving employees today!
